N.J. store donates 5,000 squares of Pope Francis carpet

Nearly one month after Pope Francis' 2015 visit to Philadelphia, more than 5,000 of the 6-inch by 6-inch squares of white, gold and gray carpet used during the papal Mass on Benjamin Franklin Parkway have been given out as souvenirs.

Crews from Hunterdon County's Flemington Department Store were onsite at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and stages for the World Meeting of Families installing grey linoleum and 10,000-square-feet of carpet.

Requests have come in from California, Texas, Oklahoma, Australia, England, Germany, Ireland and even the island of Saipan, store owner Ted Resnick said, adding they still have squares to spare.

"Some people were there in person, some people watched every moment of it on TV," said Flemington Department Store Web Coordinator Joanne Adler.

Handling requests has been her life for the past three weeks, Adler said, but the undertaking of stuffing envelopes and answering emails gives her and everyone at the store joy.

"They're so excited, I try to keep that in perspective. People are very gracious. They send magnets and cards they made to say thank you and bless everyone that works here," she said.

Many of the requests come from people in need to some kind of hope, and while most who want squares are Catholic, there are people of all faiths who like Pope Francis and his message Adler said.

"One woman, she has a son sick with something terrible and she wanted a piece to put under his pillow... She said it's silly, but it's not silly at all if it gives people comfort," she said.

While carpet pieces are free, the store has directed people to make donations of any amount to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, raising more than $38,000 so far.

With a long resume of high profile events, Resnick has installed temporary carpet for three presidents -- Obama, Bush and Clinton -- and at events honoring the presidents of Mexico and France and the king of Sweden.

You may have seen his work at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan for its annual gala, over the ice in Rockefeller Center for the tree-lighting, the Orange Bowl in Miami, the MTV awards, the Tribeca Film Festival, in United Nations and the Empire State Building and even at Donald Trump's daughter's wedding in Far Hills.

But to Resnick, Pope Francis' visit to the United States was the "thrill of a lifetime."

"Working for the pope is the Super Bowl of our industry, and we've done it twice now," he said. In 2007, he installed carpeting in two venues for visits by Pope Benedict XVI.

"It puts the store in a different light," he said. "No one has done it in Hunterdon County or even New Jersey."

And giving away swatches of the carpet is Resnick's way of sharing the experience and giving back.

Want your own piece of history? Resnick says if you're local, visit the store in Flemington for a carpet square. For those outside of New Jersey or the United States, contact the store at carpet@fdsnj.com. The store will charge for international shipping.
